NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR POLICE & PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION

Newfoundland and Labrador finally has its own organization dedicated to honor the memory of police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty. Currently, there are 15 such names and two historical names have been forwarded for consideration to be added to the memorial of the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians etched on the national monument in Ottawa.

The Newfoundland & Labrador Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Monument will be in recognition of 16 fallen officers from our province of Newfoundland & Labrador. This Memorial will cost approximately $ 150,000.00 and our goal is to have it paid for before our 3rd Annual Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in September 2005.

Professor Donald Foulds is the artist/ designer/ organizer and has developed the total design and is overseeing the construction of the NLPPO Memorial Monument. The work on this project is hired out to students from the Visual Arts Department at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook and professional craftsmen. They are doing parts of the overall design such as carving and assembling segments of the total. Work on this Monument has started since May 2003.

The design of this project will represent all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador and all members of police and peace officers. The monument will serve as: a memorial to the police and peace officers who have died in the line of duty (designed to add names as needed), as a focal point for memorial and commemoration services, events and celebrations and, as a landmark that will provide a public focal point for the Newfoundland and Labrador police and peace officers.

The overall design will give the viewer the "feel" that we would like them to have when they think of the police and peace officers or organizations. The monument will not feel too playful or aggressive, oppressive, enclosing, nor looming over the community. But rather will feel protecting, stable, organized, open and pleasing to spend time with.

History will be referenced through the inclusion of the symbols of the police and peace officers crests. This memorial will not have specific images or references that would exclude any individual, police or peace officer group, or region. All groups will be reflected in the imagery and design.

The Labradorite Stone required for the main base of our Memorial was donated and moved to Nain by Labrador Inuit Development Corporation. From there it was Transported from Nain to Lewisporte by Woodwards Group of Company Marine Division. Transported from Lewisporte to Corner Brook by Ways Transport in Corner Brook

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador officially proclaimed the last Sunday in September of every year as Newfoundland and Labrador Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Day. The Provincial Memorial Day gives Newfoundlanders and Labradorians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers who made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.
